introduction

What Sustainability means to us.

At Birchwood Park Golf and Country Club, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. As a proud GEO-certified club since 2013, we have consistently worked to reduce our environmental impact while championing innovative solutions that improve nature, resource efficiency, and our community. Over the past year, we have undertaken a series of ambitious sustainability initiatives that highlight our commitment to creating a greener future for golf.

  • Kitchen weighing food waste

In 2023 we recognised that 23% of all our waste was food waste processed through Anaerobic Digestion. In total around 13.65tonnes of waste was produced between February and December, an average of 1.24 tonnes of food waste per month.

In 2024 we decided to try and understand the main source of this waste. We decided that we could weigh the food being wasted from stock to then estimate how much is ‘plate waste’.

  • Reporting Energy & Waste Usage

In an effort to increase staff engagement and impact we have started to produce a simple, visual scorecard to represent how well the club is performing in terms of both:

    • Reducing energy consumption across Electricity, Gas and Water
    • Improving the waste segregation to recycle more and allow less to go to Energy from waste.
