Taking Climate Action

Our actions are part of the solution.

Climate change is crucial

We are taking action

The need for effective climate action has never been more pressing which is why we have integrated climate action into our 7 commitments. It is critical for fostering a resilient future, protecting ecosystems, and ensuring social and economic equity

  • Installation of Swimsuit Dryers

During 2023 we recognised that we were using around 57,000 plastic bags in the leisure changing rooms and we started to look at a solution to reduce this. The bags were used by members to transport their wet kit home once they had finished using the club.

We found swim suit spin dryers which remove the majority of water in the swimsuit meaning that we can chose to remove the plastic bags from the areas completely.

  • Cardboard Water

BGL Company as a group, instigated a change in the water we purchase from our supplier. As our number one sales item in retail it produced a lot of plastic waste. Between F&B and Retail we sold over 12,000 plastic bottles of water. The cardboard container is 100% recyclable and has the lowest level of carbon footprint compared to other packaging types.

  • Reusable Gloves

We identified that our cleaning team were using singles use, disposable gloves whilst carrying out duties.

We decided to purchase pairs of reusable gloves in order to be able to reduce the amount of waste we produced

  • Changing Milk

We recognised that we were using a significant amount of plastic milk bottles and explored options to reduce this. We estimate that we were going through around 15,000 plastic milk bottles each year.

We have now moved to Milk Pergals which contain a plastic bag inside a cardboard box (both of which can still be recycled). This is significantly less packaging.

  • Waste Segregation

Initially we were focused on improving the waste segregation within the back of house areas as we felt most in control of this. All areas were given two bins. A DMR and a general waste.

Once this was in place we carried out inspections and challenged behaviour and highlighted poor practice where waste was not being managed properly.

We then recognised that the vast majority of waste within the gym area was able to be recycled and so we have now put new bins in the gym and the studios to capture this.

  • Electric Marshal Buggy

The group made the decision to move away from petrol Marshal buggies to electric buggies in an effort to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide produced.

  • Paper Bags

We explored various options to move away from plastic carrier bags in the shop however we felt this was the best option. Whilst the paper bags are twice the cost of the plastic bags, the volume that we go through means the cost increase is negligible in the larger scheme.

  • External Recycling Bins

In an effort to improve the customer waste segregation we have installed 3 new split waste bins. We have initially installed 2 at the main entrance and one at the Kelvedon entrance with a view to installing more bins in due course.
